Job submission and queue management on Genome is managed by open-source software from Sun Microsystems called Sun Grid Engine (SGE). SGE provides fairly straight-forward methods to submit jobs to the cluster, set options for each job and obtain job results, as well as managing users' access to nodes. Individual nodes in Genome run the Redhat Linux operating sytem.

Genome is designed to be used primarily for bioinformatics research. Some bioinformatics software relies on raw MPI calls to specially designed and compiled programs that run in a parallel environment. Other software has not been parallelized, but custom scripts can submit many thousands of jobs that run on a first-in first-out schedule.
